Physical fitness can be really really exciting. It can be fun and envigorating. But what is the definition of physical fitness? Are all things fitness created equal?

I don’t believe they are.

Here’s my defintion of physical fitness and it’s requirements:

The purpose of physical fitness is to tone your body, cut fat, and increase muscle strength.

With that being said, there are many things that can be axed from being defined as physical fitness. many of these things are workout tapes and dvd’s. Many of these dvd’s with an exception of a few like P90X, only focus on burning calories and have no strength building component.

One of the biggest problems with workout tapes is that they don’t allow for a continually elevated heart rate. If you’re under 35, your heart rate should generally be at 165 – 170 beats per minute and 150 beats per minute if you’re 35 or older. This is not entirely accurate however, since there are other factors to consider such as weight and intensity.

Workout tapes often have long periods of breaks in which you’re listening to the instructor and you’re standing stationary or moving very slowly. This will slow your heart rate quickly and is adversely effective in a strong fitness routine.

Now lets discuss the definition of physical fitness again to make one thing clear.

Technically any activity that accelerates your heart rate beyond it’s resting rate for a period of 10 minutes or longer could be considered physical fitness. However it may not be effective, so be sure you’re heart rate is constantly above what it should be based on your age, weight, and intensity.
